Snifit Reviews: Prototype

Well, it’s been awhile, but I’m back, and writing more reviews for the games you thought you loved. Today I’m reviewing Prototype. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to the hype.
See why after the jump.
Prototype has had it’s release date pushed back more times than I care to remember. The hype surrounding the game was massive. I admit, I fell victim to the hype and became intrigued with the game. The action looked frantic and the powers looked amazing.
Unfortunately, after playing the game for quite some time, I came to a conclusion that this is one of the most repetitive games out there. It almost seemed like they only made the premise to last for 2 hours and then copy and pasted the rest of it over and over, only making minor changes throughout. The premise seemed original at first, giving you an open world, amazing free running abilities, and the power to make your arms into giant swords. However, after getting past the 2 hour mark, I realized that the game was essentially repeating itself and that the RPG-style of leveling up was repetitive and easy to master. The out of story mini-game challenges had no context and some were insanely difficult to accomplish.
One of these mini-games was a free-running time trial, which was fun. In this mini game you must run through a series of shining orbs and try to beat the pre-established time. Unfortunately, the controls for free-running were nowhere near precise, causing you to miss the orb by a fraction of a foot and forcing you to backtrack and start the race all over again.
The story is the best part about the game. The story missions however are very basic. Escort missions, Bland boss battles, and fetch missions. I do love the web of intrigue idea, where you encounter random NPCs that hold some knowledge of the disaster that is occurring. However, the story does not make up for the basic, repetitive gameplay that plagues what might otherwise be a great game.
