Three Ways to Destroy ______

by Jake Prime on Jul.03, 2009, under Rants

How should we take down the king of computers?  The possibility of Microsoft’s demise has given hope to the Mac and Linux cultures for many years; however, this is not an easy task, but it can be done.  Let’s find out how.

Zombie software? More likely than you think!

1. Monopoly

Well, we all know how the last Microsoft monopoly trial went; however, with the right chutzpah, one could take them to court and win.  Breaking up Microsoft into two or more parts will give each part a greater chance at destroying themselves.  If one part – let’s say the Xbox division – comes into financial trouble, like the first 6 years of Microsoft’s gaming enterprise, the other parts will have a hard time backing them up with surplus funding.  Really, breaking up the monopoly should be the first step in bringing down Microsoft.  Breaking up Microsoft will not destroy the company, but it will bring them closer to ruin.

2. Games

Okay, so I have told you about the quality and/or quantity of games that both Nintendo and Sony seem to be lacking.  Microsoft has a great number of games, with a fair percentage being quality games, but they do not have enough blockbusters.  Without a preponderance of ultra-high selling games, the console risks falling into the realm of oblivion (not THAT Oblivion) due to its inability to stay relevant, news-worthy, and of course, profitable.  Nintendo has survived on the franchises that do extremely well, even through thin times (N64 and GC).  Sega, the console manufacturer, with less than 10 games in the top 500 drowned when it made some extremely bad financial and promotional decisions, and did not have the money to hold itself above the water table.  If the Xbox division intends to tread water (proverbially, water and electronics do not usually mix well) they need to start producing or obtaining exclusive mega-hits, and getting them to be system exclusives.

3. Armageddon

The phrase “too big to fail” gets thrown around a lot in these troubled economic times, and I am of the opinion that Microsoft does indeed fit into this category.  Not in the-they-are-failing-let’s-all-get-together-and-bailout-Microsoft way, more in the-we-are-failing-let’s-petition-Microsoft-to-bail-US-out-way.  They can weather the storm of a high Red Ring of Death rate, a media eating monster, and NXE update failure, not to mention the lawsuits.  They can deflect legal and problematic bullets with a style unlike The Tick. So, to spoon (pun superlatively intended) out the destruction of Microsoft with the greatest of ease would take a feat that no single mere mortal could execute.  With that in mind, I am taking the easy way out on this and saying Armageddon would possibly destroy Microsoft.  Please note the word possibly, I cannot be certain of this claim, and I fear what ramifications may ensue.

So, was that dose of pseudo-scholarly nonsense inadequately fulfilling your knowledgeable pallet?  Do you understand a single word I just said?  If not, feel free to leave a few comments either here, or in our wonderful forums, where the wonders never cease to abound.
