First off, I'm on neither side of the oldschool vs newschool, I love Don Hertzfeldt and I love Pixar.
The Animation debate isn't just 2D vs 3D Its 2D hand drawn vs 3D digital (kind of). Which you hinted at in your last paragraph, What I'm looking forward to is when digital Animation reaches the point where they can make Metal look exactly (exactly!) like metal, once it reaches that point the Technique becomes less and searching for emotional connection and heart in the animation becomes the main priority. I think it's the mistakes and imperfections that separate science and art and makes art easier to connect with.

I hate to break it to you, but Street Fighter 4 is a 3D game with 2D play. Hypothesis destroyed?
